The AFOQT Instrument Comprehension subtest has 20 questions and six minutes of testing time in the current official Air Force information pamphlet. That averages 18 seconds per question. Each problem presents two dials—an artificial horizon and a compass—and four aircraft silhouettes. Your task is to select the aircraft whose attitude and heading best match the instruments.

What the artificial horizon shows

In the official diagram, the small aircraft fuselage silhouette stays fixed. The heavy black line represents the horizon, and a black pointer indicates bank. The horizon line and pointer move as the aircraft’s attitude changes.

Climb, level flight, or dive

Use the relative position of three elements: the fixed fuselage silhouette, the horizon line, and the pointer.

  • Level pitch: the horizon line is directly on the fuselage silhouette.
  • Climb: the fuselage silhouette appears between the horizon line and the pointer.
  • Dive: the horizon line appears between the fuselage silhouette and the pointer.

The greater the separation described in the official diagram, the greater the amount of climb or dive. Do not substitute rules remembered from a different style of attitude indicator. Learn the relationship shown in the Air Force sample.

Bank direction

The pointer supplies the bank information:

  • No bank: the pointer is at zero.
  • Bank to the pilot’s right: the pointer appears to the left of zero.
  • Bank to the pilot’s left: the pointer appears to the right of zero.

That reversal is a common source of mistakes. Label it explicitly during untimed practice: pointer left, aircraft banks right; pointer right, aircraft banks left. The horizon line remains perpendicular to the pointer.

What the compass shows

The right-hand dial is labeled COMPASS. Its arrow shows the direction in which the aircraft is headed. The official examples include north, west, and northwest. You do not need to infer heading from bank; read it directly from the compass arrow.

Keep heading separate from attitude:

  • The artificial horizon tells you climb/dive and bank.
  • The compass tells you heading.
  • The answer silhouette must satisfy all three conditions.

An aircraft can be banked right while heading in any compass direction. Do not assume a right bank means an eastbound heading or that a left bank means westbound.

The fixed viewing convention

The official directions state that you are always looking north at the same altitude as each of the four aircraft. East is always to your right on the page. This fixed viewpoint lets you translate compass heading into the appropriate front, rear, or side view.

  • An aircraft heading north is generally moving away from a viewer positioned south and looking north.
  • An aircraft heading south is generally moving toward that viewer.
  • East is toward the viewer’s right.
  • West is toward the viewer’s left.

For diagonal headings, combine those relationships. For example, northeast combines motion away from the viewer and toward the right. Use the exact official silhouettes during practice because bank and pitch change how the wings and fuselage appear.

A reliable four-step solution method

Step 1: Determine climb, level flight, or dive

Read the horizon line relative to the fixed fuselage and pointer. Eliminate silhouettes with the wrong vertical attitude. Do not estimate an exact pitch angle unless the answer choices require a visible distinction.

Step 2: Determine bank

Read the pointer relative to zero. Remember that pointer-left indicates a right bank and pointer-right indicates a left bank. Eliminate choices with the wrong low wing or level wings.

Step 3: Read heading

Read the compass arrow and translate it using the fixed north-facing viewpoint. At this point, the remaining silhouettes should differ mainly by front/rear/side orientation or diagonal direction.

Step 4: Confirm all three variables

Before selecting, state the complete result in the same order every time: “climbing, banked right, heading northwest,” for example. Verify that the silhouette matches pitch, bank, and heading—not just two of them.

Common errors and their corrections

Reading a full cockpit that is not on the test

Several prep pages teach altimeters, airspeed indicators, vertical-speed indicators, or colored attitude displays. The official AFOQT sample uses a specific black-and-white artificial horizon and compass. General aviation knowledge is useful elsewhere, but it is not a substitute for this format.

Reversing the bank pointer

If your pitch and heading are correct but the wing direction is consistently wrong, isolate the bank rule. Drill official-style examples with only the pointer position changing until the reversal is automatic.

Using heading to guess bank

Heading and bank are independent inputs in the problem. Read each from its assigned dial. A compass direction alone cannot tell you whether the aircraft is level or banked.

Ignoring the observer’s viewpoint

A correct heading can still lead to the wrong silhouette if you forget that the observer always looks north. Write a small N at the top, E at the right, S at the bottom, and W at the left of scratch paper if your testing instructions permit it.

Practicing slowly forever

Untimed practice is appropriate while learning the rules, but the official section allows only six minutes. Once you can identify all three variables accurately, transition to timed sets and measure both completion and accuracy.

A seven-session practice plan

  1. Official-format orientation: read the Air Force directions and work through its sample without timing.
  2. Pitch-only review: identify climb, level, or dive before looking at heading.
  3. Bank-only review: drill pointer left/right and the corresponding aircraft bank.
  4. Heading and viewpoint: translate cardinal and diagonal headings into front, rear, and side views.
  5. Combined untimed set: use the four-step method and log the source of every error.
  6. Half-section timing: target ten questions in three minutes without abandoning the sequence.
  7. Full official timing: complete 20 questions in six minutes, then review errors by category.

Repeat sessions five through seven as needed. Improvement should be judged by timed accuracy and completion, not by claims of guaranteed percentile gains.

Use a diagnostic error log

For every missed problem, record one primary cause:

  • Pitch relationship
  • Bank-pointer reversal
  • Compass heading
  • North-facing viewpoint
  • Missed combination check
  • Time-pressure guess

If most errors fall in one category, isolate that skill before doing more mixed sets. Completing hundreds of questions without diagnosing the pattern can reinforce the same mistake.

Pacing the six-minute section

Six minutes for 20 items means 18 seconds per question on average. That does not mean every question must take exactly 18 seconds. Familiar headings may take less; diagonal views or subtle attitudes may take more.

The official pamphlet states that scores are based on correct answers and that examinees are not penalized for guessing. Follow the instructions provided at your test site and in your testing interface. If you must choose between leaving an item unanswered and making an informed selection, remember the official no-penalty guidance.

Practice with a visible six-minute timer only after the interpretation rules are reliable. Speed comes from applying the same three-variable sequence, not from skipping a dial.

How Instrument Comprehension affects the AFOQT

The official composite-construction table assigns Instrument Comprehension to the Pilot composite. It is one contributor among several, not a separately reported percentile that can be converted into a guaranteed number of Pilot-composite points.

Avoid claims that a certain number of correct answers will produce a specific percentile or that a small raw-score change guarantees selection.
