First diagnose why the score is low

Complete a timed set, then review every missed question and every correct answer you were unsure about. Assign each one to exactly one primary error category:

  • Knowledge: you did not know the definition, rule, relationship, or formula.
  • Setup: you knew the math but translated the expression or diagram incorrectly.
  • Process: you made a sign, fraction, exponent, factoring, or arithmetic error.
  • Pacing: you could solve it accurately but not within a useful amount of time.

  • reducing fractions and converting among fractions, decimals, and percents;
  • order of operations and signed numbers;
  • ratios, proportions, factors, and multiples.

Algebra

  • solving one-variable equations and simple systems;
  • distributing, combining like terms, and handling negative signs;
  • factoring common factors and common polynomial patterns;
  • using exponent rules and evaluating expressions.

Geometry terms and relationships

  • angle types and angle sums;
  • triangle and quadrilateral properties;
  • perimeter, area, circumference, and volume;
  • reading a diagram without assuming it is drawn to scale.

A practical 14-day recovery plan

This is a sample structure, not a guaranteed score-improvement timeline. Extend it if your diagnostic shows several knowledge gaps.

  1. Day 1—Baseline: complete a timed Math Knowledge set, record accuracy and completion, then classify every error.
  2. Days 2–4—Largest knowledge gap: relearn one narrow skill at a time and solve enough untimed examples to explain each step.
  3. Days 5–6—Second-largest gap: repeat the same learn, explain, and practice cycle.
  4. Day 7—Mixed checkpoint: complete a mixed set and compare its error categories with Day 1.
  5. Days 8–9—Accuracy under light time pressure: use short sets and stop after each one to correct the work.
  6. Days 10–11—Pacing: practice moving on when a problem is consuming disproportionate time.
  7. Day 12—Full simulation: complete 25 questions in 22 minutes under quiet, uninterrupted conditions.
  8. Day 13—Repair: redo every miss without looking at the solution, then solve a parallel problem.
  9. Day 14—Retest: use a different 25-question set and compare accuracy, completion, and error mix.

Use pacing checkpoints without rushing every question

An even 22-minute pace produces these approximate checkpoints:

  • Question 5: 4 minutes 24 seconds elapsed
  • Question 10: 8 minutes 48 seconds elapsed
  • Question 15: 13 minutes 12 seconds elapsed
  • Question 20: 17 minutes 36 seconds elapsed

The official pamphlet says there is no guessing penalty and advises making a selection even when unsure. Therefore, reserve enough time to ensure every item has an answer. Follow the instructions given by your test administrator for navigating or recording answers in your specific administration.

Three original practice checks

1. Fractions

Question: What is 3/8 + 5/12?

Solution: The least common denominator is 24. Convert to 9/24 + 10/24 = 19/24.

2. Algebra

Question: Solve 4(x − 3) = 2x + 10.

Solution: Distribute: 4x − 12 = 2x + 10. Subtract 2x and add 12: 2x = 22, so x = 11.

3. Geometry

Question: Two angles in a triangle measure 38° and 67°. What is the third angle?

Solution: Triangle angles sum to 180°. Compute 180 − 38 − 67 = 75°.

Do not stop at checking the answer. If you miss one, name the exact rule you needed and solve a second problem using it. That is what turns a correction into a reusable skill.

How to tell whether the plan is working

Track three numbers for every full set: percentage correct, questions answered, and errors caused by process rather than missing knowledge. A useful trend is higher accuracy without a falling completion rate. If completion improves while accuracy collapses, you are rushing. If accuracy is high but several items remain unanswered, work on recognition and decision speed.

What is the difference between Math Knowledge and Arithmetic Reasoning?
